Glass fiber, also called fiberglass, is an inorganic non-metallic material mainly made from waste glass or quartz sand. The raw materials are melted at high temperature from 1100- 1300 ℃ and turned into molten liquid. Through very tiny pores, the molten liquid becomes glass fiber which has the advantages of light weight, thermal insulation, fire prevention, flame retardant, anti-corrosion, electric insulation, weather resistance, etc. Glass fiber can be further processed into fiberglass cloth, fiberglass woven roving, fiberglass mat, fiberglass tapes and ropes. Glass fiber products are widely used in many fields.
Glass fiber is the basic material for making fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). Glass fiber woven roving and glass fiber mat can combine with chemical resins such as polyester resin, epoxy resin, phenolic resin to make into a very strong material called fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). In our daily life, there are many FRP products such as fiberglass windows and doors, fiberglass boats, fiberglass swimming pool, fiberglass storage tanks, cooling towers, tanks, fiberglass tables and seats, etc. FRP products are very light in weight and have very high strength. They can replace steel products in many fields and have become an indispensable part in our every day life.
Glass fiber is an excellent thermal insulation material and can be used in many thermal insulation fields. Fiberglass cloth, fiberglass tapes and ropes can be used as expansion joint filler, sealing insulation material for furnace doors. They are very flexible thermal insulation materials and can be used as wrapping and covering insulation materials for hot steam pipeline systems and various kinds of high temperature equipments. Glass cloth can be made into welding blanket, fireproof curtain, fireproof sleeves, etc. Glass fiber products are also heat and cold insulation materials. They can be used at the temperature between -70 ℃ to + 550 ℃ and can used to wrap pipelines to protect the pipelines to resist hot and cold weather and wind erosion.
Fiberglass has good chemical corrosion resistance property. It resists many chemical substances, various organic solvent and can be made into petrochemical pipelines, storage tanks, anti-corrosion grilles and other corrosion resistant products. It also can be used as anti-corrosion lining materials for chemical reactors and other chemical equipments in petrochemical industry.
Glass fiber mesh and glass wool are excellent insulation building materials and can be widely used in wall enhancement, external wall insulation, roof waterproof and other aspects. They can be used to strengthen cement, plastic, asphalt, marble and mosaic. They are the ideal engineering material for the construction industry. Glass fiber is a non-toxic and harmless material. It is an environmentally friendly material to replace asbestos.
