What Is Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP)

Fiberglass reinforced Plastic (FRP) is a composite material composed of glass fiber and chemical resins. Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) is usually reinforced with fiberglass woven roving (a kind of fiberglass fabric) and fiberglass mat. The glass fiber materials are combined with a resin (usually polyester resin, epoxy resin or phenolic resin) to form a strong FRP material with many excellent properties.


The resin acts as a binder, holding the glass fibers together and providing protection and reinforcement of the material. Through the proper production process and curing process, the glass fiber is combined with the resin to form a hard, corrosion-resistant, weather-resistant FRP composite material.


FRP is a very light weight material. Its density is only 1.5 - 2 g/ m3. It is much lighter than metals, but its strength is very higher and sometimes it is as high as some metals. So it can be made into boats, insulation building material, airplane parts, swimming pools, doors and seats, etc.


Since FRP is made from fiberglass material and chemical resins, it does not rust and corrode. The boats made from fiberglass can withstand seawater attack without rust and corrosion. Seawater is very corrosive, especially to metals. FRP is a good corrosion resistant material and has good resistance to atmosphere, acid, alkali, salts, oils and solvents. FRP can be made into petrochemical pipelines, anti-corrosion grid, storage tanks and many other corrosion resistant equipments. 

 

FRP has very good electrical insulation property, especially the E-glass cloth. It can be made into various kinds of electrical components and used as electrical insulation material to wrap electrical motors and other electrical equipments. Fiberglass E-glass cloth contains very small amount of metal alkali, usually less than 0.8% and has good electrical insulation property. The cloth can be made very thin and is an excellent electronic grade cloth which can make printed circuit board (PCB). 


FRP products can be seen everywhere in our every day life and we have a lot of fiberglass products around us. FRP has many advantages. In some fields, we can use FRP to replace steel and other metals. With FRP products used in our life, we can save a lot of metals. FRP has become an indispensable part in our life.
