Welding sparks and splashes always burn welders and even cause a fire or explosion, so it is important to use a suitable implement to keep the welding workers from sparks and splashes, protect the properties from damage and eliminate the hidden hazard in surrounding areas. Welding blanket has the advantages of fire resistance, flexibility, abrasion resistance, durable and easy to drape. It can shield against sparks, molten slag and splashes, so it is the most useful instrument for welding workers as well as the welding operation sites.
Welding blankets can be made from different kinds of high temperature resistant materials, among which the coated fiberglass cloth is one of the most commonly used fabrics. Coated fiberglass fabrics for making welding blankets include silicone coated fiberglass cloth, PU coated fiberglass cloth, PTFE coated fiberglass, aluminum laminated fiberglass cloth, vermiculite coated fiberglass cloth and so on. Welding blanket made from silicone coated fiberglass is soft and smooth and can resist temperature of 280 degrees C. Aluminum foil laminated fiberglass cloth is an ideal material of welding blanket for reflection and direct heat contact. Vermiculite coated fiberglass welding blanket can resists high temperature of 800 degrees C, higher than the temperature of the other coated fiberglass welding blankets. Welding blankets also can be fabricated from heat treated uncoated fiberglass cloth. If the operation site is large, the heat treated fiberglass cloth without coating and sewing is the most suitable materials to be used. It only needs to spread the cloth on the entire operation site to prevent sparks and molten slag. The price of the heat treated uncoated fiberglass fabric is lower and its temperature is usually higher than many coated fiberglass welding blankets. High silica cloth is a material to make welding blanket. This fabric contains 96% SiO2 and can resist high temperature of 1000 degrees C. High silica welding blanket is usually used in places where extremely high temperature is required. Ceramic fiber cloth is being capable of making into welding blanket. This fabric is usually thicker than the fiberglass cloth. The thickest ceramic cloth is 6mm. When ceramic fiber cloth is used as the material for welding blanket, it is more suitable to be coated with vermiculite which can make the fabric dust free to provide a safer working environment for welders and to protect properties as well. The vermiculite coating layer also can enhance the tensile strength and abrasion resistance of the blanket. Ceramic welding blanket coated with vermiculite and reinforced with stainless steel wire can resist high temperature of 1000 degrees C.
Welding blanket has many different sizes, such as 1m x 1m, 1.2m x 1.2m, 1.2m x 1.8m, 2mx3m and so on. The thickness of the blanket is usually from 0.8mm to 3mm. The thinner than 0.8mm and thicker than 3mm blankets also can be made. Extra large and extra thick welding blankets can be fabricated according to requirements. There are many colors of the blankets such as grey, golden, yellow, brown, black and so on.
Application methods of welding blanket are very easy. It can be spread on the ground of the operation site or hung in a suitable place according to requirements. Keep a distance of more than 60cm from the blanket, which can effectively prevent small and medium-sized sparks. The blanket is soft and resilient and is also an ideal choice for wrapping uneven surface of the objects and equipments. It can be repeated use for many times.
